Anthropic’s Claude AI service appeared to go down on Tuesday, and users asking is claude down had a fast answer from the outage trackers: more than 2,000 Downdetector reports by 1:27 p.m. ET.
The disruption reached the web interface, API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork at the same time. For anyone depending on Claude for chat, development, or internal work, that meant the problem was not limited to one surface.
Downdetector Signals Claude Errors
Downdetector showed more than 2,000 reports at 1:27 p.m. ET, or 10:27 a.m. PT. That kind of spike is the clearest public sign that a service problem has moved beyond a few isolated complaints.
Anthropic’s status page reported the issue just before 1:30 p.m. ET. The company said it was investigating elevated errors affecting many models and across Claude’s web interface, API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork.
Multiple Claude Products Affected
The broad spread across products is the friction point here. A single outage on a chatbot is one thing, but errors across the web interface, API, Claude Code and Claude Cowork mean different kinds of users lose access at once.
That leaves customers who built workflows around Claude facing a wider break than a simple login issue. Developers using the API, as well as people using Claude Code or Claude Cowork, were all pointed at the same underlying problem.
Anthropic Investigation Continues
The company was still investigating the elevated errors when the report went out, and the story was described as developing. CNET reached out to Anthropic for details.
The practical question for users is whether their own error is part of the wider outage or a separate problem on their side. For now, the status page and the rising Downdetector count are the only public signals that the service disruption reached beyond a single product or use case.
