Google released android 17 on Tuesday, and the final version arrived first on Pixel devices with a bubble bar and expanded Gemini features. Pixel owners get the new multitasking tools first, while the rest of the release points to where Google wants Android and its hardware to go next.
Android 17 adds a bubble bar that lets users organize, move, and quickly access recent apps as bubbles at the bottom of the screen. That gives Pixel users a faster way to jump between active tasks without digging through the full app switcher, and it pushes Google’s interface closer to a more persistent multitasking layout.
Pixel Drop brings Gemini Omni
A Pixel Drop arrived with the Android 17 release, and it adds support for Gemini Omni, Lyria 3, and AudioLM on the Pixel 10a. Gemini Omni lets users edit videos in a conversation, while Lyria 3 lets people create music tracks with text prompts and images in the Gemini app.
That mix turns the Pixel Drop into more than a cosmetic update. Google is tying everyday media tasks to its AI tools, which could shorten the number of steps between recording, editing, and sharing.
Android 17 security and sharing
Android 17 also adds Mark as Lost in Find Hub, Live Threat Detection, and other threat defenses. Screen time limits and content-filtering tools can now be set with a PIN without linking a Google account. Those changes give families and device owners more control without forcing every setting through account setup.
The release also lets users record themselves with the selfie camera and phone screen at the same time for reaction videos that can be shared on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram. Android Quick Share will also become compatible with Apple’s AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and 9a devices, which gives those owners a cross-platform file-sharing option that Google has not offered before on those phones.
Wear OS 7 and Pixel Watch
Google also released Wear OS 7 on Tuesday. The Pixel Drop brings emergency detection features to the Google Pixel Watch, and the watch will automatically contact emergency services and selected emergency contacts if it detects a car crash, fall, or lack of pulse.
Watch owners can also receive live updates from phone apps that mirror to the Pixel Watch. Wear OS will add more Gemini Intelligence features this summer, including personalized widgets, Personal Intelligence, multistep automation, and battery life improvements of up to 10%.
