Treyarch said cod black ops 2 ps5 players will get native PlayStation versions of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in July. For PlayStation owners who have only been able to stream the games through PlayStation Plus Premium, that changes how two older series entries will run on PS4 and PS5.

Treyarch and Iron Galaxy

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon, with Iron Galaxy Studios handling the modern PlayStation versions. Black Ops first arrived in 2010, and Black Ops 2 followed in 2012, both originally released for Xbox 360, PC, and PS3. Bringing them to PS4 and PS5 as native ports gives Sony users access without relying on a streaming layer.

That part is the real shift. PS4 and PS5 do not play PS3 games natively, which is why these titles had remained available on modern PlayStation consoles only through PlayStation Plus Premium. The new versions should put them on the same footing as the Xbox releases that have been playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S since 2016.

Xbox Since 2016

2016 is the dividing line here. That was when both games became playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through Microsoft's backward compatibility program, while PlayStation users were left with streaming access instead of a local install. The ports narrow that gap, even if they arrive years after Xbox players got the native-console path.

One unresolved issue sits with ownership. People who already own Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PS3 do not yet know whether they will get the new ports for free or be able to transfer progress, and if that option exists it may be limited to digital copies. Iron Galaxy’s work also appears to be aimed at the games as they exist now, since the server setup is presumed to stay the same rather than move to new servers.

PS3 Owners Wait

“Classic Black Ops games are coming to PlayStation, but aren't getting important updates on Xbox or PC.” That line captures the awkward tradeoff in the announcement: PlayStation gets native versions, but the broader platform picture still centers on older releases rather than a full refresh. July will tell PS4 and PS5 owners whether these ports are a clean upgrade path or just a new way to buy the same two games.
