cod black ops ps5 is getting two native ports in July. Treyarch said Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will move to PlayStation, with Iron Galaxy Studios handling the conversion work.
The games first arrived in 2010 and 2012, then sat on the PlayStation side in a narrow lane: PS4 and PS5 owners could only stream them through PlayStation Plus Premium. That is the practical change here. For players who still want these versions on a modern Sony console, the wait for a downloadable release is nearly over.
Treyarch and Iron Galaxy
Treyarch is sending two of its older releases back into circulation, and this time the route runs through Iron Galaxy Studios. The studio is handling the porting work for modern PlayStation versions, which means the original Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 releases are no longer the only options in the market.
That also puts these games into a different commercial lane than they had on PlayStation before. Until now, modern Sony hardware could only access them by streaming, while Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S have carried both titles since 2016 through backward compatibility. The new ports give PlayStation owners a native option instead of a rented stream.
2010 and 2012 back again
Call of Duty: Black Ops launched in 2010, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 followed in 2012. Those release dates matter because the games are old enough to have been locked to PS3-era hardware, and PS4 and PS5 do not play PS3 games natively.
The result is a split audience experience that has lasted for years. Xbox players could keep booting up both games on newer consoles starting in 2016, while PlayStation players had to rely on streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium if they wanted to revisit them on current hardware.
PlayStation players in July
July is the first concrete answer for anyone waiting on these versions. Treyarch’s move gives PlayStation owners a straightforward way to buy or play two legacy Black Ops entries without depending on streaming access.
One detail still hangs over the release: it is unclear whether owners of the PS3 versions will get the new native ports for free or be able to carry over progress. That question will shape how smooth the transition is for long-time players, especially the ones who have already invested time in the original releases.
