cod black ops is heading to PlayStation in July, and Treyarch is moving both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 onto modern Sony hardware. For PS4 and PS5 owners, that changes access from streaming-only through PlayStation Plus Premium to native play on the console itself.
Treyarch and Iron Galaxy
Treyarch announced the July port after years in which the two games sat in a strange middle ground on PlayStation. Iron Galaxy Studios will handle the work of creating the modern PlayStation versions, which turns a long-dormant catalog gap into a fresh release for a new round of players.
Black Ops arrived in 2010 and Black Ops 2 followed in 2012. Both were originally released on Xbox 360, PC, and PS3, so the new PlayStation versions are not new games so much as a long-delayed restoration of access on current hardware.
PS4 and PS5 access
Since 2016, the pair has been playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through the Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program. Sony’s PS4 and PS5 do not play PS3 games natively, which left PlayStation users with streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium as the only path to these titles until now.
That makes the July release more than a catalog refresh. It gives PlayStation owners local access to two Treyarch shooters that have already spent years available on Microsoft’s modern consoles, while also putting Sony’s current systems closer to feature parity on a pair of legacy Call of Duty releases.
Progress and ownership
The practical wrinkle sits with players who already bought both games on PS3. Treyarch’s announcement leaves open whether those owners will get the new native PlayStation port for free or be able to carry over progress, so the immediate value is clearer than the transfer path.
A broader assumption in circulation is that the ports will hook into the games’ existing server network rather than use new servers, which suggests Treyarch is treating these releases as modern wrappers around established live infrastructure. For PlayStation players who have only had streaming access, July is the point when that limitation finally changes.
