kylian mbappé says his move to Real Madrid has made daily life in Madrid feel more normal. The 27-year-old said he can go out on the street without security and live more freely than he did in France.

“I’m very happy in Madrid; I can live more freely than in France. I can go out on the street without security. I can live my life and make plans that I didn’t make before. It’s good. I do very normal things, more than people think,” Mbappe said in a recent interview with Le Parisien.

Mbappe and Madrid

He also said, “I’m prepared to be famous; I have to deal with that.” The comments land after two difficult years technically at Real Madrid, even though he won the European Golden Shoe in his first season and the Liga top scorer award twice.

That mix of success and strain sits at the center of his Madrid spell. Mbappe has produced scoring honors, but Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League twice in a row during his absence, keeping the comparison with his old club alive.

The 2022 final pain

Mbappe also revisited the 2022 World Cup final, where France lost to Argentina on penalties. He said, “It’s very difficult to lose a World Cup final. It’s a competition that takes place every four years. Many of the players from that match are no longer in this World Cup. That’s the cruelty of it – to think we went through all that only to lose on penalties. I don’t believe in luck; penalties aren’t a lottery. It’s a technical skill, but it remains the cruellest way to lose a World Cup final.”

France will open its 2026 World Cup campaign against Senegal, and Mbappe’s comments add a personal edge to a team build-up that already carries the memory of that final. For him, Madrid has changed the rhythm of everyday life; for France, the next stage starts with the same player still carrying the weight of 2022.
