Andre ayew was left off Ghana’s final 26-man roster for the 2026 World Cup, a sharp turn for a 36-year-old forward who has been a central figure for the national team. Carlos Queiroz made the call as Ghana trimmed its squad for North America.
Ayew brings 10 World Cup tournament games and 113 caps, and he is one appearance away from tying Asamoah Gyan’s World Cup appearance total for Ghana. Instead, Jordan Ayew will carry the captain’s armband for a side entering its sixth World Cup.
Jordan Ayew Takes The Armband
Jordan Ayew has inherited the captaincy for the 26-man group, giving Ghana a different leadership profile heading into the tournament. He has 118 caps, 33 goals and 20 assists, and he played at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups.
The shift leaves Ghana without one of its longest-serving attackers after a stretch in which Andre Ayew’s role had already narrowed. After the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, he made only two appearances for Ghana, and both came as late substitute appearances.
Queiroz Chooses A Younger Front Line
The roster decision fits a move toward younger players in Ghana’s front line, with Queiroz opting for a different mix around the attack. Ayew’s omission is the clearest sign of that change, especially with his record still sitting at 113 caps and 24 goals across all competitions for Ghana.
Mohammed Kudus is described as Ghana’s most important absence for the competition, adding another hit to the squad’s attacking options. Thomas Partey’s situation also shaped the buildup, after he was denied entry into Canada and a Canadian federal judge upheld that decision.
Ghana Opens With Panama
Ghana begins its World Cup campaign against Panama on Matchday 1, and the squad will do so without Ayew in the lineup that once centered on him. That leaves Jordan Ayew as the veteran presence in the attack while Ghana tries to adjust its leadership and production at the same time.
For a team taking part in its sixth World Cup, the roster shows a clear break from the old core. Ayew’s absence, paired with the loss of Kudus and the Partey ruling, gives Ghana a much thinner margin as the tournament starts.
