j j mccarthy enters an offseason quarterback battle with Kyler Murray, and the Vikings are treating it as a true competition for the starting job. Both quarterbacks are expected to believe they can win the role, which leaves no clear favorite heading into the summer.

McCarthy And Murray

The clearest sign of how open this is came from Tom Pelissero, who said, “They envision it being a true competition: Kyler Murray versus J.J. McCarthy,” and added that both quarterbacks will go into it believing they are going to win the job. He also said the room is going to be “very competitive.”

McCarthy reached this point after a rough start to his NFL career. The Vikings selected him 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, but he missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury and then dealt with multiple injuries in his second NFL season. In 2025, he played in 10 games and posted a 6-4 record as a starter.

Vikings Open Mind

His 2025 numbers show why the Vikings are not handing him the job. McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes, averaged 163.2 passing yards per game and threw 11 touchdowns, but he also had 12 interceptions in 10 games. The performance left the quarterback room unsettled as the offseason began.

That uncertainty is exactly where Murray enters the picture. The former No. 1 overall pick in 2019 was released by the Arizona Cardinals and then signed a league minimum deal with Minnesota. He brings seven seasons of NFL experience, a two-time Pro Bowl résumé and a 2025 line that included a 2-3 record as a starter in five games, 68.3% completions, 192.4 passing yards per game, six touchdown passes, three interceptions, 173 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.

Quarterback Room Pressure

The Vikings had already signaled this approach before Murray arrived. Kevin O'Connell called for “more depth and competition in the QB room” in January, and Rob Brzezinski said in February that the franchise would “explore every opportunity” at quarterback in the offseason. Pelissero said the staff is keeping an open mind, and that leaves McCarthy and Murray competing for one job, not sharing it.

For the Vikings, the practical result is simple: the starting job is wide open, and the offseason will decide whether the younger first-round pick or the veteran newcomer wins it. For McCarthy, the next step is not about reputation; it is about beating Murray in a room built for competition.
