Sophia Bush appears in the Grey's Anatomy conversation around Kevin McKidd's exit from the Season 22 finale that aired on May 7. McKidd left alongside Kim Raver after 18 seasons as Dr. Owen Hunt, ending one of the show's longest runs with a character built to split opinion.

May 7 finale exit

McKidd joined Grey's Anatomy in Season 5 in 2008, then spent 18 seasons in the role that made Owen Hunt one of the series' most persistent pressure points. He also directed 49 episodes during that stretch, so his departure removes both an on-screen regular and one of the show's frequent behind-the-camera contributors.

The finale exit landed after years of storylines that kept Owen in conflict with other characters. Shonda Rhimes created him as a man who did not care what people thought and did his own thing, and McKidd said, “He was designed to be polarizing and provocative and kind of an antagonist at times.”

Owen Hunt's long run

That design played out early. In Season 5's “Life During Wartime,” Owen introduced himself by pulling back a curtain to reveal four anesthetized pigs and stabbing them one by one, prompting Izzie Stevens to walk out and call him a monster. Owen then had Cristina euthanize all four pigs after the lab was done.

Season 5 also gave him a different kind of damage. In “Beat Your Heart Out,” Beth Whitman brought her father to the hospital and found Owen alive and back from Iraq after he had not told her, even though she had prayed for him every night during his deployment and called him in tears when she found a spider in her apartment. Owen later ended their engagement with a two-line email.

Kim Raver leaves too

Another Season 5 moment kept Owen in the show's most uncomfortable lane: he choked a sleeping Cristina in a PTSD-induced sleep trance, a detail that tracked with his history as a former army medic. He also snapped at Derek and told him to look in the mirror at his own problems when Derek suggested therapy.

McKidd's exit alongside Raver closes out the Season 22 finale with two departures instead of one, which makes the May 7 episode the clean break point for a character who had been part of the show for 17 seasons in the source's framing. For viewers, the practical takeaway is simple: Owen Hunt is out, and McKidd's 18-season turn as the character is over.
