Zbigniew Ziobro said on Sunday evening that he was in the United States after leaving Hungary and flying there on Saturday. The former justice minister made the statement on Telewizja Republika, using the words “wczoraj przyleciałem.”
His whereabouts matter in Poland because he is being sought on a wanted notice and a European Arrest Warrant. The charges in the Fundusz Sprawiedliwości case include 26 offenses.
Telewizja Republika and Hungary
Ziobro’s account added a new location to a case already moving across borders. AFP said the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not comment on his whereabouts, and the Prosecution Office said on Sunday on platform X that it did not yet officially have data confirming that he had crossed the Schengen border.
A photo from Newark airport in New Jersey was circulating online and was received by TVN24 from a viewer. AFP also said it was not clear how Ziobro reached the United States because Poland had previously said his Polish passport was invalidated.
Extradition and visas
Waldemar Żurek said Poland would seek immediate extradition of Ziobro after official confirmation of his presence in the United States. That puts the next step on the Polish side: a formal response to the fact that he is now outside Hungary and said he arrived in the United States on Saturday.
, citing Gazeta Wyborcza, reported that Donald Trump personally intervened in the approval of Ziobro’s and Patrycja Kotecka’s visas. said the visa decision was made against the recommendations of Marco Rubio and Tom Rose.
Hungary after Fidesz
Euronews’ Italian branch recalled that Ziobro lost political protection in Hungary after the Fidesz election defeat. The Hungarian website 444.hu said he fled Hungary on the same day that Peter Magyar was sworn in, and quoted the portal as saying: “Uciekł z Węgier tego samego dnia, w którym Peter Magyar został zaprzysiężony.”
The same portal also quoted: “Węgierski rząd twierdził, że demokracja i praworządność w Polsce przeżywają kryzys, w rzeczywistości jednak przyjął polityka oskarżonego o kierowanie zorganizowaną grupą przestępczą i defraudację 150 milionów złotych.” That leaves Ziobro abroad, under Polish pursuit, with Warsaw signaling extradition and the visa route drawing outside attention.
