Anthony Davis's future in Washington remains unsettled, and that keeps a possible Lakers reunion on the table this summer. He is entering the final year of his contract, and the move would hinge on whether Washington stays patient with a player who has appeared in only 29 games since being traded for Luka Doncic a season and a half ago.
Chris B. Haynes and Davis
Chris B. Haynes said Davis's future is still up in the air, with the possibility that he may seek a trade this offseason if he does not buy in. That puts the focus on how Washington handles a roster that is still rebuilding and a veteran on an expiring timeline.
The uncertainty is the point. Davis has not settled into a long run in Washington since the deal that sent him there for Doncic, and the limited 29-game sample since then leaves the Wizards deciding whether to keep pushing forward with him or move before the situation turns into a pure rental.
Lakers Cap Space Window
Los Angeles is positioned to watch closely because the Lakers could have at least $50 million in cap space. That number opens a path to absorb most, if not all, of Davis's salary in a trade without sending a player back, a structure that would give the Lakers flexibility instead of forcing them to match money with another rotation piece.
If that route becomes available, the Lakers could then re-sign Austin Reaves and possibly even bring back LeBron James. A healthy Davis is also better than anyone Los Angeles would be able to sign in free agency, which is why the Lakers should strongly consider the move only if they do not have to give up any picks and can take on his contract this summer.
Austin Reaves and LeBron James
That is the tradeoff hanging over the talks. Washington has a veteran whose future is not settled, while Los Angeles has the cap room to chase a reunion without stripping the roster or the draft cupboard if the price stays at contracts rather than picks.
For Davis, the next step is straightforward: buy in, or face another move. For the Lakers, the opening is just as clear, and it starts with whether their cap space can turn a reunion idea into a workable summer deal.
