Dunfermline Athletic moved on 1-0 on aggregate after a 0-0 draw at Arbroath, with neil lennon watching his side finish the job across two legs. The result sends Dunfermline into the semi-final against Partick Thistle, with the first leg at East End Park on Tuesday.

Arbroath Holds, Dunfermline Advances

The second leg stayed goalless, but Dunfermline already carried the advantage from the first match and protected it through a tight night at Gayfield. Lennon said before the match that it was going to be “attritional and physical,” and the tie played out that way from start to finish.

His side did not create the cushion he wanted on the night, yet the aggregate score was enough. Dunfermline had gone 1-0 ahead in the first leg, and that early edge stood up when Arbroath failed to score in the return.

After the final whistle, the Dunfermline players celebrated, then were told to rest their legs and minds for the semi-final against Partick Thistle. That next round now carries the same pressure, but it starts with Dunfermline carrying momentum rather than chasing it.

Lennon Sees the Missed Chance

Lennon did not hide where he thought the tie should have been settled. “Over the two legs, we deserve to go through. There's no question about that. We should have been two or three up from the first game,” he said.

He also pointed to the key moment that nearly changed the outcome. “Of course, anything can happen in football and we give away the penalty - sloppy from us, but Aston produces a really good save,” Lennon said.

That save preserved the aggregate lead and kept Dunfermline in control of the tie. Lennon added that the group can now “look forward to Partick Thistle,” and expects a different test against a side he believes will make the semi-final “much more of an open game.”

Oxborough Stands Up

Aston Oxborough was the other figure carrying the night’s weight. He said he was “gutted” when the penalty was awarded, then added that he was thankful Dunfermline got through.

From the replay, the goalkeeper said he knew he was not getting to the attempt, but could not pull out. He said he was hoping the effort was outside the box, though it was clearly not, and praised the strike by saying, “To be fair, he's hit it really well. I'm just thankful I managed to get down.”

That stop mattered because Dunfermline had spent most of the tie trying to protect a narrow lead rather than build on it. They now move into the Partick Thistle semi-final with the first leg at East End Park on Tuesday and a place in the next round secured.
