George Furbank returned to action for Northampton Saints and started at fullback against Leicester Tigers at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on 9 May 2026. He was also listed as captain for the East Midlands Derby, a key selection for a side that arrived with eight straight league wins and a four-point lead at the top.
Dowson's Welford Road call
Phil Dowson named his squad for the derby with Furbank leading the side from the back field. George Hendy moved to the wing to join Tommy Freeman, while Fraser Dingwall and Rory Hutchinson started together in midfield and Alex Mitchell partnered Fin Smith at half-back.
The pack was set with Emmauel Iyogun, Robbie Smith and Luke Green in the front row, JJ Van Der Mescht alongside Tom Lockett in the second row, and Callum Chick as the only change in the back row with Josh Kemeny and Sam Graham.
Furbank and Freeman
Freeman brought the sharpest attacking number into the lineup. He had 13 tries before the Leicester match and stood as the PREM's second top try-scorer, giving Northampton another edge as they tried to extend a run that had already taken them four points clear after beating second-place Bath Rugby.
Furbank's return mattered just as much on the selection sheet. Northampton had already beaten Leicester in the reverse fixture at cinch Stadium at Franklin's Gardens, and a second win over the Tigers would complete the league double while tightening control of the table.
Saints' play-off route
The consequence was simple for Saints. A bonus-point win would seal their play-off place with three rounds to spare, and they carried that chance into a ground where they had not won a league match since a 19-18 victory in 2023.
That mix of form, standing and history made Furbank's return more than a routine lineup note. Northampton did not just restore their captain; they took a top-of-the-table derby side to Leicester with a chance to finish the job early.
