Valve’s steam controller reservation story is now about files, not stock: it released a full set of CAD files for the Steam Controller and the Puck under a Creative Commons license. The package gives modders design data for the shell and engineering diagrams, while commercial accessory makers have to go through Valve directly.

Valve Steam Controller CAD files

The release includes.STP,.STL, and engineering diagram versions of each device. Those diagrams show the areas that must stay uncovered so the devices keep signal strength and work as designed.

That is the practical difference between a pretty model and something builders can actually use. Accessory makers now have geometry they can work from, but they also have to respect the parts of the design that affect radio performance and fit.

Creative Commons license terms

The license allows non-commercial use. It also requires attribution and sharing designs back to the community.

That puts a clear line in front of anyone trying to turn the files into a business. Commercial entities interested in making accessories for the Steam Controller or its Puck can contact Valve directly to discuss terms.

Will on Valve hardware

Will, a website editor for Digital Foundry, said the release was welcome but not unexpected. “Very cool of Valve to do stuff like this.”

Valve has done this before. It released CAD files for the Steam Deck handheld, the Valve Index VR suite, and the original Steam Controller a decade ago.

For modders, the immediate takeaway is simple: the files are open enough for personal and community projects, but not for a direct commercial copy-paste. The unresolved piece is pricing and terms for companies that want to make accessories at scale, because Valve says those makers need to contact it directly.
