Microsoft’s xbox game plan is moving into hardware testing, with Project Helix dev kits set to go out in 2027. That puts the next system far enough along for developers to start working against real hardware, even as Microsoft has not shared a release timeline for the device.
Project Helix in 2027
Pure Xbox said devkits are definitely going out next year, and that the specs will have to be pretty close to complete for that to happen. Ben, the writer behind the report, also said Microsoft is focusing on Project Helix and being more open about it than before.
The same report describes Helix as a more premium, PC-like system, with Asha Sharma having recently touched on affordability around Xbox. That leaves Microsoft balancing two ideas at once: a niche device that will not move tens of millions of units, and a console business that still needs a broad audience.
Sony’s PS6 timing
Sony said it has not yet decided on what time the PS6 will launch, and it also has not yet decided what price it will launch at. Sony tied that uncertainty to changing business models, which makes Microsoft’s firmer hardware cadence around Helix stand out by comparison.
Pure Xbox said Microsoft likely wants a lower-volume device with its next-gen console and that Helix is a premium system power-wise. It also said the strategy is simpler because Microsoft does not have to curate a closed ecosystem nearly as much as Sony and Nintendo do.
Series X and S stay relevant
Pure Xbox said the Series X and S will still exist and remain relevant well into the next generation, alongside Microsoft’s current-gen focus. That suggests Helix is not being positioned as an all-or-nothing reset, but as a higher-end branch of the Xbox line.
For players, the practical read is straightforward: Microsoft is already far enough into Project Helix planning to put dev kits in developers’ hands in 2027, but it has still not laid out a release timeline. The next real signal will come from how much of that PC-like, premium hardware vision Microsoft is willing to spell out in public.
