Flamengo travel to Colombia on Friday for independiente medellín vs flamengo with a chance to move closer to the Copa Libertadores round of 16. They top Group A with seven points, and a win at the Atanasio Girardot would all but guarantee progress.

Flamengo's Group A edge

Leonardo Jardim has made early qualification one of his main targets in his first months in charge, and Flamengo arrive after opening the group with wins over Cusco and Independiente Medellin. Their last continental outing ended 1-1 in Argentina against Estudiantes, with Arrascaeta leaving that match with a shoulder injury and now unlikely to feature again before the World Cup break.

The trip is Flamengo's 31st fixture of the season and their 17th away game. On the road, they have seven wins, three draws and six defeats, and they have averaged 1.75 goals per game away from home. That makes the Colombia assignment a direct test of whether they can turn group control into early qualification before the bracket tightens.

Independiente Medellin at Atanasio Girardot

Independiente Medellin sit third in the group on four points from three games, which keeps them in the race but leaves less room for error. Sebastian Botero can name the same side that beat Cusco in the last round, and Leider Berrio remains the only confirmed absentee after a knee fracture that has sidelined him since February.

The home side still carries signs of strain from Sunday, when they lost 2-1 to Aguilas Doradas and were eliminated in the first phase of the Torneo Apertura. Supporters inside the Atanasio Girardot protested against owner Raul Giraldo Gomez, who later issued a public apology on social media after a heated post-match exchange on the pitch before being restrained by players.

Medellin's numbers and pressure

Medellin did create volume against Aguilas Doradas, controlling 70% of possession and taking 20 shots, and Diego Moreno scored deep into stoppage time. Even so, the defeat left them 11th in the Apertura, two points behind Inter de Bogota, and their 2026 league record now sits at 1.31 goals scored and 1.23 conceded per match across 26 games.

Chaverra and Fydriszewski remain the main attacking outlets as Medellin try to build on Thursday's win over Cusco. Flamengo's earlier 4-1 victory over Medellin in the group and their seven-point lead leave them with the cleaner path, but the result in Colombia can still reshape the top of Group A immediately.
