Cherry Jones guest stars in hacks season 5 episode 7 as Kelly Kilpatrick, after Paul W. Downs called her three times to get her to say yes. The episode, titled Montecito, lands inside the show’s fifth and final season as Deborah keeps trying to claw back attention after losing her Late Night show.

Paul W. Downs’ Third Call

Jones said she initially kept turning the role down. “I kept saying no and Paul finally called me a third time weeks later. And, and I thought, ‘Well, my God, no one's ever wanted me that much.’ So I have to do that, that gives you confidence,” she said. The casting lands with extra weight because Kelly is not a polite cameo; she is one of Deborah’s arch-nemeses, an out lesbian and fellow comedian who despises her.

That setup puts Jones opposite Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder in a weekend where Deborah and Ava pretend to be girlfriends while visiting Kelly and her wife Monica in Montecito. Leslie Bibb plays Monica, which turns the episode into a concentrated guest-star piece rather than a broad season detour.

Montecito and Madison Square Garden

Jones said the script won her over on the page even before the role did. “When I read it, I just thought it was hilarious, but I didn't want to do it because I don't do that much comedy, I mean I hardly have ever done any comedy, and I so revere Jean Smart,” she said. The hesitation makes sense: this is a performer with four Emmys and a Tony-winning résumé stepping into a comedy that asks her to trade on timing rather than prestige.

During filming, the show’s creators raised the stakes again. “Lucia [Aniello] and Jen [ Statsky] and Paul [W. Downs] said at one point while we were shooting it, in all sincerity, ‘We think this may be the funniest episode of the series.’ And I thought, holy shit. That's good,” Jones said. That kind of internal read matters because the season is already built around Deborah fighting back publicly after losing her show and trying to stage a comeback at Madison Square Garden, where the only slot available lands on 9/11.

Kelly Kilpatrick’s Turn

Jones also described the practical upside of the shoot: “I got paid money to go to work every day and watch Hannah Einbinder and Jean Smart go to town like that. And then I get to play wives with Leslie Bibb? They sweetened the deal even more,” she said. The joke lands because the episode uses a guest star to sharpen the season’s central conflict instead of distracting from it.

For viewers, the payoff is straightforward: episode 7 is not just another stop in hacks season 5, but a high-skill showcase built around a rare casting get. Jones arrives as Kelly Kilpatrick, the character positioned to make Deborah’s comeback efforts more complicated, and the creators are treating the hour as one of the sharpest of the series.
