Keir Starmer said he was "not going to walk away" after Labour lost hundreds of councillors in England as the haringey local elections 2026 count continued across more than 5,000 seats. Reform is the biggest winner so far, with more than 900 council seats picked up across 136 local authorities and six mayoral races.
Results from all counts in England are expected by Saturday. The figures come as voters across England, Scotland and Wales wait for a wider set of election outcomes, with the English count forming the largest part of the night’s ballot.
Starmer and Labour losses
Starmer’s remark came after Labour lost hundreds of councillors in England. He said he was "not going to walk away," setting out his response as the party works through a count that has already moved sharply against it in several areas.
Reform’s gains are the clearest early result. With more than 900 council seats, the party has emerged as the biggest winner so far in England while the rest of the count continues through Saturday.
England count across 136 councils
The English elections cover more than 5,000 seats across 136 local authorities, alongside six mayoral races. That makes the count one of the largest local tests of party support in the current election round, with many results still to come.
For readers following a single area, that means the picture can still change as counts finish in different councils. The scale of the vote means early seat totals may not match the final distribution until all areas have reported.
Scottish and Welsh results
The wider election night also includes Scotland and Wales. The projects the SNP will win the most seats in the Scottish parliament but fall short of a majority, while in Wales it forecasts Plaid Cymru as the largest party in the Welsh parliament, also short of a majority.
In Wales, Eluned Morgan loses her seat. The Scottish Parliament has 129 members, known as MSPs, with 73 constituency MSPs and 56 regional MSPs, and a party needs 65 seats for a majority. Wales has 16 new constituencies electing six members each, with the 96 seats allocated by share of the votes and 49 seats needed for a majority.
