Boston weather stays dry for the Wednesday commute before showers and general thunderstorms move into Greater Boston during the evening, forecaster Ken Mahan said. Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island are expected to be dry when people head to work, with rain arriving after the day’s warmer stretch.

Greater Boston is expected to see highs near 70 on Wednesday, with scattered showers during the afternoon and evening. Commuting temperatures in eastern Massachusetts should be in the upper 50s and 60s, while a few spots could crack 70 degrees by late morning or early afternoon.

Ken Mahan forecast

Mahan said a southerly flow is bringing milder air into New England for the day’s final warm stretch. Afternoon highs in eastern Massachusetts are expected to stay in the 60s under cloudy skies, and the coast should run a few degrees cooler. The Cape is likely to linger in the low 60s.

A front will slowly move through New England on Wednesday, bringing showers and general thunderstorms to Vermont and western Massachusetts in the morning. Those areas are expected to see rain first, while Greater Boston waits until later in the day. Southerly winds may reach 15 to 25 mph at times, and dew points are expected to be in the mid-50s regionwide.

Greater Boston timing

Boston is expected to pick up very little rain, even as western Massachusetts and northern New England may see up to a half inch. Isolated totals in northern New England may be closer to an inch. Central and western Massachusetts are expected to see showers and general thunderstorms roll in during the morning and linger through much of the day, while southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, the Islands and Rhode Island see showers later in the day and into the night.

The front and rain are expected to clear the region by Thursday, leaving a mostly dry day with cooler temperatures. A secondary low may form just south of New England by early Thursday morning, but the practical effect for eastern Massachusetts is a quicker turn toward a cooler, quieter day after Wednesday evening’s showers.
