A brush fire in la broke out around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday in Neenach west of Lancaster and quickly grew to about 80 to 100 acres near 265th Street West and Avenue B 8. Crews faced a fast-moving blaze near state Route 138 and the Kern County line as evacuation warnings and orders were issued.

Neenach Response

The Los Angeles County Fire Department sent five air units to help battle the fire after it was reported. The fire went to a second alarm just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, adding more resources as responders worked to slow its spread.

By about 45 minutes after it was first reported, the fire had moved from about 2 acres to 20 acres and then to 80 to 100 acres. That pace left little margin for crews working in a remote part of Los Angeles County west of Lancaster.

Structures Near Route 138

Structures were threatened as firefighters worked the blaze, and evacuation warnings and orders followed. For people living or working near 265th Street West, Avenue B 8 and Route 138, the most immediate step was to follow the evacuation notices already in place and stay clear of the area.

The combination of air units, a second-alarm response and evacuation orders shows crews were dealing with more than a routine brush fire. The fire’s quick jump in size left the response centered on protecting nearby structures while keeping access open for engines and aircraft.
