Heiner Wilmer began his five-day munster pilgrimage tour one week before he is installed as bishop of Münster. On the first day, he walked from Emstek over Höltinghausen to Bethen in the Oldenburger Münsterland with about 100 people.

The route started at St. Margaretha in Emstek. Wilmer said he wanted to listen to people, get to know them and talk with them before taking office.

Emstek and Bethen

Friederike Asbree, who is part of the ten-person organizing team, said, "Ich finde es total cool, dass er seine Pilgertour durchs Bistum bei uns beginnt". She helped prepare the visit in Emstek six weeks earlier.

Wilmer opened the day by greeting the group with, "Einen schönen guten Morgen wünsche ich".

Wilmer's first day

The pilgrimage is taking place under the heading "Zusammen geht was" and is set to cover different regions of his future diocese on foot. Wilmer said, "Ich möchte Ihnen zuhören, Sie kennenlernen und mit Ihnen ins Gespräch kommen".

Among the participants were educators, farmers, soldiers, teachers, engineers, police officers and bankers. Andre Knappe, an Oberstleutnant, joined the walk, and the day included planned stuhlkreise so believers could exchange views about their faith.

Wilmer said, "Welche Erfahrungen machen Sie mit dem Glauben und mit Gott? Mich interessiert, was Sie bewegt. Ich möchte Ihnen zuhören." The first day also marked an early public encounter with people from a part of the diocese that includes Lower Saxony and is administered through the Bischöflich Münstersches Offizialat in Vechta.
