Shane McAdam has retired from the Melbourne Football Club in 2026 after playing just three AFL games for the Demons. The 30-year-old leaves after an injury-ravaged spell that kept him off the field for most of his time at the club.
McAdam’s short Melbourne stint
McAdam played 53 AFL games across his career, with 50 of them coming at Adelaide before his move to Melbourne at the end of 2023. He had kicked 20-plus goals in consecutive seasons for Adelaide in 2021 and 2022, then managed only three games for Melbourne in 2024.
His Melbourne run never settled. He battled soft tissue injuries throughout that first season, then suffered an Achilles injury ahead of 2025. Those setbacks left the Demons without the forward they thought they were adding when he arrived from Adelaide.
Melbourne’s list reshuffle
Alan Richardson said, “Shane has been a valued member of our club and we fully support his decision to return home to his family” and added, “Unfortunately, Shane has battled injuries during his time at the club, which has made it difficult for him to contribute out on the field the way he would have liked.”
Richardson also said, “On behalf of everyone at the Melbourne Football Club, we thank Shane for his contribution and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.” McAdam is the third Melbourne player to retire in 2026, after Steven May and Tom Campbell.
Three picks for Tuesday night
His retirement feeds into Melbourne’s list position before Tuesday night’s Telstra AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft. With McAdam gone, and with Tom Campbell also retired and Jai Culley sidelined by an ACL injury, Melbourne has three picks in the draft.
That gives the club a direct route to replace depth on the list after a season in which McAdam’s role was limited to three games. For a player who once delivered consecutive 20-plus goal seasons at Adelaide, the final Melbourne tally is a brief ending to a move that never got enough time on the field.
