Eric Clapton ended concert early after being hit with object during a Madrid show on May 7, 2026. The 81-year-old was struck in the chest at the Movistar Arena toward the end of his set and left the stage without returning for the encore.

The object appeared to be a vinyl record thrown from the crowd, and Clapton appeared to be uninjured. The stage exit mattered because the Madrid audience had reached the point where the show should have been winding into its final stretch, not ending abruptly.

May 7 and the encore

Clapton’s post-show message made his view plain: “Very sad indeed. What kind of idiot does that? /0bNZ3wYFU7” He was on the road in Europe before a run of U.S. shows later this year, so the incident landed inside an active touring stretch rather than at the end of a stand-alone appearance.

That schedule already runs through May 10 in Barcelona, May 13 in Mannheim, May 15 in Köln, and May 17 in München before later dates at Sandringham Royal Estate on Aug. 23 and a six-city U.S. run beginning Sept. 6 in Detroit. The band behind those shows includes Doyle Bramhall II, Sonny Emory, Chris Stainton, Tim Carmon, Nathan East, Katie Kissoon, and Sharon White, with Jimmie Vaughan set as the special guest on the U.S. dates.

Fans throwing things on stage is nothing new, but it has become a growing problem in recent years, and Madrid gave Clapton another example of how quickly a concert can turn from routine to cut short. The practical takeaway for ticket holders on the remaining dates is simple: the music keeps moving, but the room now has a fresh reminder that one thrown object can erase the encore.
