Police charged an 18-year-old Miles man after an incident at a toowoomba shopping centre on 8 May. Officers said they were called to a Hill Street address around 1.16pm after reports of a man armed with a knife causing a disturbance.
The man was restrained by members of the public and arrested by police a short time later. Three members of the public were assessed by QAS with minor injuries, and one man was taken to Toowoomba Base Hospital with a laceration to his hand.
Hill Street response
Police charged the Miles man with one count each of intended to cause grievous bodily harm, going armed so as to cause fear, and stealing. He was denied police bail and is expected to appear at Toowoomba Magistrates Court on 9 May.
Police said, “There is no ongoing threat to the community.” That statement leaves the court case as the next step for the accused, while the injuries from the disturbance have already been recorded and treated.
Toowoomba Magistrates Court
The case now moves to Toowoomba Magistrates Court, where the charges will be heard after the arrest and bail refusal on 8 May. For people in the shopping centre at the time, the immediate practical fact is that police have tied the incident to a specific address on Hill Street and say the public is not facing a continuing threat.
