Christopher D. Toukonen was arrested Thursday after school staff at Lely High School found a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine in his classroom in Naples, Florida. The 44-year-old teacher was taken into custody after deputies and detectives responded to the school and interviewed him.

School administrators had received reports of suspected narcotics use while Toukonen was alone in the classroom without students present. School personnel searched his backpack and found illegal narcotics before contacting the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Youth Relations Bureau deputies and Vice and Narcotics Bureau detectives responded to the campus after the discovery. Detectives later executed search warrants at Toukonen's classroom and vehicle on school property, and they found no additional narcotics in either place.

Toukonen is facing a charge for possession of narcotic paraphernalia. Sheriff Rambosk said, "Thanks to the swift actions of school staff and our deputies and detectives, this situation was addressed immediately," and added, "I commend everyone involved for their handling of this situation."

Collier County charge

The case centers on a public high school classroom, where the search started with school staff and ended with a law enforcement arrest on campus. For students, parents, and employees at Lely High School, the immediate issue is that the classroom search, the backpack discovery, and the campus warrant sweep have already produced a criminal charge, but no additional narcotics were found in the classroom or vehicle.
