kyle lowry was not the subject of the post, but a 31-year-old Sixers fan named Matt turned a playoff travel quirk into a Reddit plan aimed at Knicks fans heading to Philadelphia for Game 4. He suggested using refundable Amtrak Flex tickets to push prices higher for New Yorkers trying to make the trip.

Matt posted the idea on r/Sixers under the username InHinkieITrust after driving home from South Jersey to Fishtown last Sunday. He wrote, “Click that ‘Flex’ option. Book the tickets. Hit that cancel button an hour or so before departure (set multiple alarms for this). Can’t hurt if we all do this.”

Matt's Flex Ticket Plan

The pitch was straightforward. Matt told fans to pick a train time they thought a Knicks fan would choose for the 3:30 p.m. start, buy the ticket, then cancel it before departure. He described the target as “price-conscious Knicks fans.”

Games 3 and 4 at Xfinity Mobile Arena fell on a weekend, and Matt said he saw how easy it would be for New Yorkers to make the trip down via Amtrak. He believed Game 4 was especially vulnerable because the afternoon tip would still leave time to get a train back to New York that night.

Xfinity Mobile Arena Weekend Games

That weekend schedule gave the plan its edge. Matt said Game 4s were generally cheaper than Game 3s, which made the Saturday matchup the cleaner target for anyone trying to squeeze prices before a one-night round trip.

He was thinking about that route from experience. Matt said he had traveled the opposite direction to attend Sixers games at Madison Square Garden, so he knew the New York-to-Philadelphia train corridor well enough to see the opening.

Sixers Fans and Old Grievances

The Reddit post fit Matt’s longer history with the team. He bought his season-ticket package during the Sixers’ 10-win season in 2015-16, and in 2018 he and a handful of other Process diehards organized a Fire Colangelo protest at the Sixers facility in Camden.

Only a handful of people showed up for that protest. A security guard told Matt and the others to leave, and they kept protesting across the street for about two hours. That kind of follow-through now shows up in a more modern form: an online attempt to use refundable train tickets to make a playoff trip less convenient for visiting fans.

For Sixers fans, the practical move is the same as Matt’s post: book, then cancel, if they want to try to affect Amtrak availability before Game 4. For Knicks fans, the weekend schedule and the 3:30 p.m. tip are exactly what makes the route tempting in the first place.
