Randolph County Prosecutor Stephanie Luntsford named the woman accused of stealing a Randolph County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle on Thursday, identifying her as 20-year-old Alayna Mason of Moberly. Mason was arrested on suspicion of stealing a motor vehicle, stealing a gun and escaping from custody.

She was being held at the Randolph County Jail without bond on Friday. Charges were not filed that day because the courts were closed for former President Harry Truman’s birthday.

Lee and Morley streets

Several law enforcement agencies were seen Thursday near Lee and Morley streets after someone allegedly stole the patrol vehicle. The Moberly Police Department wrote in a Thursday social media post that the suspect was in custody before the theft, placing the case between an arrest and a later vehicle theft tied to a sheriff’s office unit.

That sequence leaves the theft linked to an already detained suspect and to the loss of a law enforcement vehicle and gun. For residents following the case, the immediate practical result is simple: Mason remains jailed without bond while prosecutors have not yet filed charges.

Randolph County Jail

Luntsford’s public identification gives the case a named defendant and a clear charge list, but Friday’s court closure pushed filing into a later step. Until charges are filed, the case remains at the arrest stage even as Mason stays in custody in Randolph County.

The next procedural step is the filing of charges once the courts reopen, and that filing will define how the case moves through Randolph County from arrest to prosecution.
