Coventry Airport will end all flight operations on May 9, starting the coventry airport closure that leads to a permanent shutdown on 11 June 2026. The move shifts the site from aviation to redevelopment, while passengers and local businesses face a short window before flights stop.
Coventry Aerodrome has given formal notice to the UK Civil Aviation Authority of its plan to close the airport permanently with effect from 11 June 2026. Rigby Group said the procedural submission was first envisaged when local planning approval for Green Power Park was granted in 2022.
GreenPower Park plans
The approved plans include seven manufacturing facilities on the location, with buildings ranging from 69k sq ft to 1.5m sq ft and a total footprint of 4.8m sq ft. A substantial battery manufacturing plant is among the facilities, and GreenPower Park is designed to establish a centre of excellence for battery technology, advanced manufacturing and clean energy.
Jim O'Boyle, the councillor responsible for jobs and regeneration at Coventry City Council, said: "What we want to see are thousands of jobs created here, giving the area an economic lift." The project could potentially generate 6,000 new employment opportunities.
Jobs at Coventry City Council
GreenPower Park is a partnership between Coventry City Council and Rigby Group, and a £23m funding package was secured from the West Midlands Combined Authority. Rigby Group said four firms were currently exploring interest in the site, but no businesses to operate the battery facility or the other elements of the project have yet committed to coming on board.
For people using the airport now, the practical deadline is immediate: flights end on May 9, and the formal closure follows on 11 June 2026 as the redevelopment process moves ahead.
