earthquake today just now struck the Brawley area of Imperial County on Saturday evening as at least 12 earthquakes rattled the region in a few hours. The first measured 3.5 magnitude and hit nearly two miles west-south-west of Brawley at 4:14 p.m., with the strongest reaching 4.4 magnitude later in the evening.

Brawley Sees 12 Quakes

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the sequence, starting with the 3.5-magnitude quake at a depth of just over eight and a half miles. That was followed by at least 11 additional earthquakes, including quakes measured at 2.6 magnitude, 2.8 magnitude, 3.5 magnitude, 3.4 magnitude, 3.1 magnitude, 2.6 magnitude, 4.4 magnitude, 2.9 magnitude, 2.7 magnitude, 2.5 magnitude and 4.0 magnitude.

The pattern gave Brawley residents a longer evening of shaking rather than a single isolated jolt. The last earthquake in the sequence was recorded at 8:13 p.m.

USGS Update on 4.4 Magnitude

The 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:22 p.m. at a depth of just over nine miles. The U.S. Geological Survey first recorded it at 4.1 magnitude and later updated the reading.

That update is the clearest sign in the record that the strongest quake was still being refined as the swarm unfolded. For residents near Brawley, the practical takeaway is simple: the strongest shaking came late in the sequence, after several earlier tremors had already passed.

Brawley Public Safety Monitoring

The city of Brawley said it was aware of the recent earthquake activity and that public safety personnel were actively monitoring conditions. The city also said there were no reports of significant damage or threats to public safety.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported. Residents were encouraged to remain alert and prepared because aftershocks may occur, a point that matters most to anyone already in the area and still feeling the effects of the swarm.

For Brawley, the immediate next step is not a new announcement but the same one public safety personnel are already carrying out: monitoring conditions as the sequence settles and any aftershocks are felt.
