ashlyn harris says she did not resent or regret the life she built with Ali Krieger, but she also admitted the divorce process left pain behind. Promoting her new documentary, she described a split that came after nearly four years of marriage and led into a new chapter that includes her relationship with Sophia Bush.

Harris on the divorce

“I don’t resent or regret anything about the life that I built with her; it just wasn’t for me,” Harris said. She filed for divorce from Krieger in September 2023, and her account turns a private breakup into the center of the film’s promotion at a moment when she is also presenting herself as fully moved on.

She was more direct about the cost. “I had to make a really hard decision. I know I hurt her in that process,” Harris said. She also said, “You try and you try and you try and you keep trying to make it work and you don’t want to fail,” before adding that “life is really short and really long at the same time.”

Ali Krieger and two children

The divorce carried added weight because Harris and Krieger share two children, daughter Sloane and son Ocean. Krieger was also Harris’s former teammate on the U.S. women’s national soccer team, which makes the split unusually public even without a game or season attached to it.

Harris said, “I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” and added, “I love myself. I don’t remember the last time I woke up being like, ‘I love the person I’m looking at in the mirror.’” That is the sharpest contrast in the story: a breakup that she says hurt Krieger, paired with a personal reset she says she needed.

Gamechangers on June 8

Gamechangers: The Ashlyn Harris Story premieres June 8 on The Roku Channel, and the documentary reaches beyond the divorce. It includes Harris discussing family struggles, her rebellious teen years, her journey on Team USA, and her relationship with Sophia Bush, whom she started dating in October 2023.

Harris said she wanted the project to feel honest. “I just always want to be authentic,” she said. “I think sharing your scars is one of the most beautiful things you can do.” For viewers, the documentary now arrives as both a career piece and a personal timeline, with the divorce, her new relationship, and her national-team past all sitting in the same frame.
