tony vitello watched the SF Giants switch out a pair of pitchers before a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs. Carson Seymour was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento, and Wilkin Ramos was optioned back to Sacramento.
Seymour back in San Francisco
The move gives San Francisco another arm after Seymour’s last big league look came in Friday’s 18-3 win over the Cubs. He allowed three earned runs across three innings, but he threw strikes and stayed in the game long enough to give the bullpen a needed bridge.
Seymour started the year in Sacramento and had been leaning heavily on a fastball there, throwing that pitch more than 80 percent of the time. The Giants are asking for a version of that same profile again, this time in a series that opens with Chicago already seeing him once.
Ramos heads back to Sacramento
Ramos had earned his promotion after a strong run in Triple-A, where he posted a 2.00 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 9.0 K/9 and a 3.86 SO/W rate in 27 innings for the Sacramento River Cats. He also kept a 61.4 percent ground ball rate, a combination that made him a logical call-up when the Giants needed relief depth.
That production did not carry over in the majors. Ramos made two appearances with the Giants, and in his second one he entered against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 12-6 lead, did not record an out and allowed three runs to score.
The roster move came after Logan Porter cleared waivers and was sent outright to Sacramento, then declined the assignment in favor of free agency. Porter had been designated for assignment earlier this week to create room for Ramos and Buddy Kennedy, and Kennedy remains with the club as San Francisco keeps reshuffling the back end of the roster.
For the Giants, the immediate effect is a different relief mix for the Cubs series and a return to the Sacramento shuttle that has already shaped this week’s roster. Seymour gets another chance in a bullpen that just watched Ramos go back down after two rough outings, and the next stretch will show whether that swap gives San Francisco more reliable innings right away.
