max kepler signed a one-year deal with the Diamondbacks while still serving an 80-game PED suspension. The outfielder is on the restricted list, so Arizona added him without getting an immediate major league return. His eligibility does not arrive until June 25 in the 2026 season.
Kepler Joins Arizona
The Diamondbacks announced the contract while Kepler was already midway through punishment tied to a positive test for Epitrenbolone. The agreement matters because his suspension keeps moving forward even after the new deal, and the final 15 games now fall under Arizona’s schedule instead of Philadelphia’s.
Kepler had been serving the ban as if he were still a member of the Phillies because he did not sign elsewhere until now. Philadelphia played its 65th game of the season on the day of the report, a marker that leaves the suspension split between two club timelines rather than one.
Phillies Numbers Matter
The 32-year-old outfielder did not arrive with empty credentials, but the production comes with clear limits. He hit.216/.300/.391 with 18 home runs over 474 plate appearances with the Phillies last year, numbers that help explain why the market stayed thin before Arizona moved.
Over 11 MLB seasons with the Twins and Phillies, Kepler has a 101 wRC+, a.235/.316/.425 career slash line, and 1,199 plate appearances. He reached a 122 wRC+ in both 2019 and 2023, and a 109 wRC+ in the shortened 2020 season, but he has otherwise been a subpar hitter in eight of his other seasons.
Defensive Fit In Arizona
Arizona was looking for a left-handed outfielder, which gives the signing a roster purpose beyond waiting on eligibility. Kepler also brings a long defensive track record, though his metrics have slipped as knee problems have followed him in recent years.
He provided outstanding right field defense during his prime with the Twins, then handled left field for the first time in his career with the Phillies. In that role, he finished with plus-2 Defensive Runs Saved and 0 Outs Above Average over 773 1/3 innings.
His path now runs through the minor leagues before he reaches the Diamondbacks’ lineup. He is expected to need a couple of weeks of ramp-up time there before his debut, so Arizona has bought future roster help while paying for it with a delayed return.
