Kevin McHale said larry bird would be a five-alarm fire in today’s NBA, and he framed the argument around the way current defenders struggle with Luka Doncic. The former Celtics star said Bird would be bigger, stronger, faster, and meaner than Doncic, making the era comparison look easy to him.

McHale’s Bird Comparison

“I just laugh at these people today,” McHale said during a recent phone call. He pointed to the modern matchup problem by adding, “These are the same dudes that can’t guard [Lakers star] Luka Doncic, and Luka Doncic is lighting them up,” then followed it with his blunt conclusion about Bird.

“And I’m thinking, ‘Larry is bigger, stronger, faster, and meaner than Luka Doncic. And if Luka is lighting these dudes up, it’d be a five-alarm fire what Larry would do.’”

He also said, “Larry would go by you a hell of a lot faster than Luka would go by you. He was a straight-line driver, and he was also just a horse.”

Bird’s Celtics Record

Bird’s case is built on production, not nostalgia. He was a 12-time All-Star, a three-time MVP, and a three-time NBA champion with the Celtics from 1979-92.

That resume sits at the center of the debate McHale is pushing back on: whether players from earlier eras would hold up against today’s athletic, switching defenses. His answer was not cautious. It was immediate and categorical.

Celtics Draft Picks Ahead

The Celtics own the 27th and 40th picks in the NBA Draft, which begins June 23. That gives the front office another chance to add talent while the Bird discussion hangs over the franchise’s history and present.

Brad Stevens said Hugo Gonzalez has had a great rookie year and called him a critical part of the Celtics moving forward because his athleticism can meet the moment in big games. He also said Gonzalez is one of the strongest guys on the team pound for pound right now as a 20-year-old, a reminder that Boston is still looking for young players who can handle playoff-level physicality.

For McHale, though, the takeaway is simpler. Bird’s size, strength, speed, and scoring touch would still play, and the modern defender who already has trouble with Doncic would face a far harsher assignment.
