Sir Gareth Edwards has resigned as a director of Cardiff Rugby Football Club after more than 22 years in the role. The move ends a long board-level stint for one of Welsh rugby’s most recognisable figures, and it comes as the club sits apart from Cardiff Rugby Limited.

Companies House listed the termination of appointment of two directors on Friday, with Edwards among them. He had previously stepped down as a director of Cardiff Blues in 2019 after 22 years on that board.

Edwards and Cardiff Rugby

Edwards’ name still carries unusual weight in Cardiff. He played 195 games over 12 seasons for the club and spent 53 consecutive Tests in Wales’ jersey, winning three Five Nations Grand Slams along the way.

His playing record goes beyond club service. He was a key player in the Lions’ victorious Test series against New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, and his try for the Barbarian against the All Blacks in 1973 is regarded as among the greatest ever scored.

Cardiff Rugby Football Club

The resignation affects Cardiff Rugby Football Club, which is separate from Cardiff Rugby Limited. That distinction matters because Cardiff Rugby Limited entered administration in April 2025, and the Welsh Rugby Union subsequently took over operations of the company responsible for the elite professional region.

For supporters, the immediate point is simple: this is a boardroom change at the club level, not a playing matter. Edwards has now closed a chapter that stretched across more than two decades, after first leaving a Cardiff board role in 2019 and now stepping away again from the football club.
