The Brewers selected drew rom from Triple-A Nashville ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Rockies, giving Milwaukee another left-handed arm after Brian Fitzpatrick went on the 15-day injured list with an elbow injury. The move came with an open spot on the 40-man roster, so the club did not need a corresponding transaction.
Rom Joins Milwaukee’s Roster
Rom reached the majors last with the Cardinals in 2023, when he posted an 8.02 ERA over eight starts. He did not pitch in 2024 because of a biceps injury, and additional health issues limited him to seven minor league appearances last season.
The Brewers signed him in December as a minor league free agent, then shifted him into a full-time relief role this year. That change produced a 3.04 ERA across 22 appearances with Triple-A Nashville and a career-high 33.9% strikeout rate.
Triple-A Nashville Numbers
His stuff also ticked in the right direction with the Sounds. Rom’s four-seamer averaged 92.5 mph, and his sweeper averaged 83.1 mph at Triple-A this year.
Those numbers make the promotion easier to read as more than a stopgap. Milwaukee needed a lefty after Fitzpatrick’s elbow issue, and Rom arrives with recent relief work, strikeout gains, and a roster opening that allowed the Brewers to add him without subtracting someone else first.
Brian Fitzpatrick’s Injury
Fitzpatrick had allowed one earned run across 6 2/3 innings out of Milwaukee’s bullpen before the setback. He had been optioned in mid-May, recently rejoined the big-league club, and threw a perfect inning on Friday against Colorado before leaving with the elbow injury.
For Milwaukee, the immediate change is straightforward: Rom is in, Fitzpatrick is on the 15-day injured list, and the bullpen gets a left-handed replacement before the Rockies game. Rom’s first chance to carry that Triple-A form into a major league role comes now.
