john yannis is the opponent Marcus McGhee needs to get back to work this weekend after an 11-month layoff. The 36-year-old bantamweight standout has not fought since Petr Yan in Abu Dhabi last summer, and the break ended only after Yannis agreed to take the bout.

McGhee And John Yannis

McGhee said the fight nearly slipped away before Yannis stepped in. “We almost lost this one but thank you to John Yannis for pulling up and deciding to take the fight, so super-grateful to be here now,” he said.

He also described the layoff as a matter of adjustment, not choice. “This is the way the cards have fallen,” he said. “You choose what you can, and you adapt to what you must adapt to, but here we are.”

11 Months In The Gym

The long gap did not leave McGhee idle. He said he used the time to get better in the gym, build his family and build his own mental fortitude, while staying grounded through what he called a “really based” family and lifestyle.

“It’s frustrating, obviously,” he said of being shelved for that amount of time. “I think in any career field, being shelved for that kind of time, you go through so many different emotional moments.”

Rather than waiting alone, he kept plugging into teammates’ work. He said he went through Kyler Phillips’ whole camp in Winnipeg, worked with Mario Bautista during Bautista’s camp, and was in with Abdul Kamara as Kamara fought regularly for Fury FC.

John Yannis Saves The Bout

That team-first routine gave McGhee a way to stay sharp while his own return kept getting pushed back. “One of the favorite parts of our gym is that we’re there for each other, so even though I haven’t been fighting, all my guys have been fighting,” he said.

He called the experience slightly different from his own regular fight schedule, but still useful. “Using the time wisely has been good for me,” he said, adding that he was able to keep improving while waiting for this weekend’s bout with Yannis.

The result is a return that carries two clean markers: the layoff ended, and the fight stayed intact because Yannis accepted it. For McGhee, the next task is simple enough — show that 11 months away did not slow him down when the cage door closes again.
