sam byram says he wants regular football as his Leeds United contract expires this summer, and the 32-year-old expects to move on after four appearances across all competitions this season. He has been a major part of Daniel Farke’s recent Leeds sides, but the forward direction of his career now points away from Elland Road.

Byram and Daniel Farke

Byram said: "For me, I still feel I’ve still got a few years ahead playing football; I’d like to play regularly if I can". He added: "It's something off the back of before coming here; I had a lot of years on the sideline with injuries. So, I think for me to get myself in a position where it’s the best I’ve felt physically, I think that’s something I really want to fulfil and play as much as I can."

The Leeds defender also pointed to Farke as the coach who reopened the door for him. "He’s the reason I’ve had a chance back here. I’m not daft enough to not realise he’s the one who gave me the foot in the door and helped me build a career here again off the back of some tough years," Byram said. "Personally, he’s revived my career over the last few years."

Leeds United Minutes

Those words sit against a sharp drop in his involvement this term. Byram made 37 appearances in Farke’s first season at Leeds United, then 39 more as the club won the Championship title the next season. This season has brought only 4 outings in all competitions, a clear break from the workload he handled during Leeds’ recent promotion push.

He joined Leeds on a free transfer in August 2023 after four seasons at Norwich City, where he made 54 appearances. That spell was affected by injuries, and his return to Leeds under Farke followed the same coach-player link that ran through his Norwich years.

Byram’s Summer Choice

Byram also looked beyond his playing days, saying: "I’m not sure. I feel like I’d like to have a go at management, but the sacrifice you make as a footballer for your family is the same in management and coaching." He added: "So, as much as I’d like to have a go at it, I think I’ve done my bit in football, and I’ll probably explore something else."

For Leeds, the issue is immediate. A player who was central across two strong seasons is heading toward the end of his deal with a clear desire for regular minutes, so the club’s summer planning will have to account for his likely departure and the space it creates in the squad.
