Napoli had borrowed Højlund from Manchester United at the start of the season for 6 million euro, with the clubs agreeing that a 44 million euro option would kick in if the Italian side reached the Champions League. They did, and the transfer now becomes a full sale.
Napoli’s Pisa Win
Napoli beat Pisa 0-3 to secure Champions League qualification, and Højlund was part of the scoreline. That one match settled the clause attached to his loan and turned the move into a permanent switch.
He has now played 43 official matches for Napoli, scoring 15 goals and adding 8 assists. Those numbers explain why the club was ready to move quickly once the trigger was met.
United’s Summer Funds
For Manchester United, the deal closes a transfer that began in 2023 when the club bought Højlund from Atalanta for about 80 million euro. The fee Napoli is now paying falls well short of that figure, but it gives new Manchester United trainer Michael Carrick more money to strengthen his squad in the summer.
Højlund had already signaled his comfort in Naples after Napoli won the Italian Supercup in December. He posted a photo on Instagram with the caption: “Dit is hoe een goede beslissing eruitziet.”
