Marc Marquez will miss the rest of the French Grand Prix and next week's Catalan Grand Prix after fracturing his right foot in a crash on Saturday. The Ducati rider was thrown off his bike on the final lap of the sprint at Le Mans, and the injury now wipes out two straight race weekends for the seven-time MotoGP champion.
Le Mans Sprint Ends Abruptly
Marquez put his right foot down on to the track just before the crash, then went down on the final lap of the sprint. Ducati said he sustained a "fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot" and would fly to Madrid for surgery.
Jorge Martin won the sprint at Le Mans, with Francesco Bagnaia second and Marco Bezzecchi third. Martin said, "I love this track. I struggled a bit in qualifying, but I knew my potential was much higher" after the win.
Marquez Loses Ground
The injury arrives at a difficult point for Marquez. He is fifth in the standings and has yet to finish on the podium this season, so missing Le Mans and the Catalan Grand Prix removes two immediate chances to collect points.
Martin's sprint win also trimmed the gap to championship leader Bezzecchi to six points, while Bagnaia's second-place finish kept Ducati in the front of the sprint order. For Marquez, the next step is surgery in Madrid and then recovery before he can think about getting back on track.
