Khamzat Chimaev puts the middleweight title on the line against Sean Strickland at UFC tonight 328 in Newark, New Jersey. The main event gives Chimaev his first defense after winning the belt at UFC 319 last August, while Strickland gets another shot after losing each of his last two championship bouts.
Prudential Center hosts the card, and Newark stays on UFC’s calendar for the third straight year. This is the second consecutive year the event has featured twin title fights at the top of the bill.
Chimaev And Strickland At Newark
Chimaev arrives as the middleweight champion after beating Dricus Du Plessis to claim the title last August. That win set up his first defense, and Strickland is the challenger trying to climb back to the top after a run that has already included two title losses.
Strickland’s path back includes a third-round stoppage win over Anthony Hernandez in February. He also owns a title-winning moment of his own, having shocked Israel Adesanya at UFC 293 to take the middleweight belt before losing it later in his championship stretch.
Van Meets Taira
The co-main event adds another title fight. Joshua Van defends the flyweight title against Tatsuro Taira, giving UFC 328 its second championship bout on the same card.
Van took the flyweight title from Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 323 last December and has since won six straight fights. Since arriving in the UFC, he has won nine of his last 10 fights, a run that has turned him into one of the night’s defining champions.
Newark’s UFC Run
Newark has hosted UFC events 11 times dating back to UFC 78: Validation, so this card extends a long relationship between the city and the promotion. UFC 328 was originally scheduled for UFC 327 in Miami before moving to Newark, which keeps the championship spotlight in a city that has become a regular stop.
For fans, the practical takeaway is simple: the night centers on two title fights, with Chimaev’s first defense at middleweight headlining and Van’s flyweight defense sitting just behind it. Newark gets another major card, and both champions walk in with something on the line.
