Southampton were charged with a breach of EFL regulations on Friday evening after Middlesbrough complained about alleged unauthorised filming ahead of middlesbrough vs southampton. The case now goes to an Independent Disciplinary Commission, with the league asking for a faster timetable than the normal 14-day response window.

Friday Evening EFL Charge

The EFL said Southampton Football Club had been charged over alleged breaches of EFL Regulations 3.4 and 127. Its statement said the matter would be referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission, and that the club would ordinarily have 14 days to respond.

Southampton said they would be fully cooperating with the League throughout the process. They also said they were unable to comment further at this time because the matter was ongoing.

Rockcliffe Training Complaint

The complaint from Middlesbrough centred on alleged unauthorised filming on private property ahead of the two clubs meeting in Saturday's Sky Bet Championship Play-Off semi-final first leg. Sky Sports News understood Boro staff spotted a man taking pictures and videos of training and approached him.

He was asked to delete the pictures and videos, provide his identity and explain his intentions for being there. He was then said to have fled to a nearby indoor part of the training complex, tried to change his appearance and left Rockcliffe entirely.

72-Hour Rule After 2019

The EFL rules strictly prohibit opponents spying on training sessions less than 72 hours before kick-off, a rule brought in after a 2019 spygate incident. That leaves this charge tied to a specific competition rule rather than a general complaint, and it gives the disciplinary panel a live issue to deal with before the tie settles on the pitch.

For Southampton, the immediate concern is not the play-off itself but the disciplinary process now moving ahead of it. The league has asked the Independent Disciplinary Commission to shorten the response period and list a hearing at the earliest opportunity.
