Breanna Stewart is back with the New York Liberty as they open their 30th season Friday at home against the Connecticut Sun. Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu and Jonquel Jones return together after winning a championship two years ago, giving New York its core again as the season begins.

The Liberty enter Friday with the same centerpiece trio that delivered that title two years ago. Stewart, Ionescu and Jones give New York a familiar base for a season that starts with championship expectations attached to the roster instead of a rebuild.
That core is no longer the only reason for the noise around the team. New York added Satou Sabally, bolstered its bench and brought in a new coach, giving the roster more depth around the returning stars.
Sabally Joins New York
Sabally’s arrival changes the shape of the rotation immediately. With three established players already in place, the Liberty can put more talent on the floor without leaning so heavily on one lineup group.
The roster is being viewed around the league as the best 12-player group, and that is the real pressure point heading into Friday. A team with that much top-end talent and depth is not being judged on whether it can compete; it is being judged on whether it can finish the job again.
Barclays Center Opens 30th Season
Friday’s opener at home against the Sun is the first test of that group in live game action. For Stewart, it is the start of another season carrying the same standard that came with the championship core, now paired with a deeper roster and a new voice on the sideline.
The Liberty do not need a long runway to explain where they stand. They begin their 30th season with Stewart, Ionescu and Jones together, Sabally added, and the league already treating the roster like the one everyone else has to chase.
