Marcelo Bielsa said fernando muslera and Uruguay are heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup H Group match against Saudi Arabia with a clear view of the challenge: every World Cup is different. Speaking before the game, the Uruguay head coach said the comparisons are difficult because each tournament is shaped by its own football, conditions and players.
Bielsa on World Cup comparisons

That was the core of Bielsa’s message before Uruguay faced Saudi Arabia in the H Group. He tied the point to his own tournament experience, saying he has seen enough variation across editions to know the differences are too large to flatten into one comparison.
Bielsa also said that being part of tournaments where the world’s best teams come together is always a pleasure. He added that 2002 football was different, the conditions in that tournament were different, South Africa was different and this one is different too.
Spain drew Bielsa’s praise
He widened the frame to Spain, calling their work admirable and their style and playing model impressive. Bielsa said Spain are really playing well and gave the impression that they have players who could serve for the next 15 years.

He did not treat that praise as a prediction. Bielsa said it is very hard to forecast how far Spain will go, even while stressing that they have great players and that the coach is decisive in shaping the team’s style of play.
Uruguay's travel point
Bielsa also addressed the flight issue from Mexico to Miami, saying it did not create any difficulty or confusion for Uruguay. That left the focus on the match itself and on the coach’s broader view of a tournament he sees as impossible to compare cleanly with earlier editions.
