Square Enix gave kingdom hearts 4 no new public update last week, even as it announced a title and spring 2027 release window for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Tetsuya Nomura said in a livestream that, on the Final Fantasy side, “We are making great strides and going according to schedule.”

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation window

Spring 2027 is the first release window Square Enix has put on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and it arrived with Nomura’s comments during a livestream dedicated to Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis. He serves as series director and creative director, which keeps him at the center of both the Final Fantasy 7 remakes and Kingdom Hearts.

Square Enix also said Nomura directed the first FF7 Remake and served as creative director on FF7 Rebirth and FF7 Revelation. The company’s Creative Business Unit 1 handles the mainline Final Fantasy franchise, the Final Fantasy 7 remakes, and the Kingdom Hearts series, so the new date gives the division a visible priority line before it returns to other long-gestating projects.

Kingdom Hearts 4 since April 2022

Kingdom Hearts 4 was formally announced in April 2022 with a reveal trailer set in Quadratum, alongside Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Since then, Square Enix has offered no official updates on the game for more than a year, and it was nowhere to be found during Summer Game Fest last week.

May 2025 added one more complication: Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was canceled as part of a company-wide strategic shift from quantity to quality, and Square Enix used that announcement to share new Kingdom Hearts 4 screenshots. That is the contradiction in the story now — the company is still willing to show the game, but not to date it.

Tokyo Game Show tease on May 12

May 12 brought another false lead for the series when fans hoped a Tokyo Game Show social media tease meant Kingdom Hearts news. The tease turned out to be for the show’s 30th anniversary, not for the game itself, which keeps the gap between public appearances and actual progress in plain view.

Nearly six years passed between the announcement and release of Kingdom Hearts 3, and Final Fantasy 16 was announced in 2020 before arriving four years later. Square Enix also revealed the title for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in June 2022, less than two years before release, so the company does not treat every major RPG the same way on the calendar.

For readers waiting on kingdom hearts 4, the practical read is simple: Square Enix is spending its public attention on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation first, and the next meaningful Kingdom Hearts update will likely have to come after that marketing push clears the schedule.
