Rangers are set to hold talks with dan neil after his Sunderland exit, reviving January interest in the 24-year-old midfielder. The move would put him back on Danny Rohl's radar after a winter-window approach and a spell at Ipswich Town that did not produce a regular starting place.

January Interest Returns

Neil was high on Rohl's Ibrox wish list in January, before he chose to try his luck in the English Championship with Ipswich Town. He helped Ipswich secure their return to the Premier League, but his role at Portman Road never settled into a regular starting run.

That lack of continuity is the practical reason Rangers are back in the frame. Neil is out of contract, his deal is running down, and the club now has a straightforward opening to speak with a player who has already shown he can handle promotion pressure at Sunderland and Ipswich.

Sunderland Exit Message

Neil confirmed his Sunderland exit in an emotional social media post. He said, “Above everything else, I would like to take this opportunity say thank you.” He also thanked coaches, team-mates, staff and fans, adding, “I’m proud of what we achieved during my time at the club and for playing my part in taking it back to where it belongs, the Premier League.”

His own words leave little room for a quick return to the Stadium of Light. He said, “Captaining Sunderland was a boyhood dream that came true, and as a supporter for life, I’m excited to see what’s next on the journey.” Rangers have been tracking that next step since the winter window, and the club's pursuit now lines up with a summer in which Lawrence Shankland is set to become Rohl's first signing.

Shankland And European Football

Shankland is set to trigger a contract clause that will let him leave Hearts for Rangers on a free transfer, giving Rohl an immediate attacking addition while he works through the rest of the market. Neil's case sits beside that move rather than behind it: Rangers can offer a route into silverware and European football, which is the clearest competitive pull for a 24-year-old who has already captained a promotion side and played through a Premier League return.

For Neil, the choice now looks narrower and cleaner than it did in January. Ipswich is unlikely to bring him back this summer, his Sunderland chapter has closed, and Rangers want talks before the market moves on without him.
