sonny aljofree has said he is leaving Manchester United after 14 years at the club, posting an emotional farewell on Instagram that called the academy and senior setup his “second home.” The 21-year-old defender’s message signals a summer exit after a long spell in which first-team chances never truly arrived.
Aljofree’s Farewell Message
“After 14 years at this amazing football club, my second home, and the place I’ve grown from a boy to man,” he wrote. He added: “I can’t thank the staff, players and everybody who has helped me enough for everything they have helped me with throughout my time.”
“I’ve made brothers for life and I will always appreciate what this club have given me. I wish everybody at the club the absolute best,” Aljofree said, before closing with: “Ready to kick on and keep growing as a person and as a player. Once a red, always a red.”
United Teammates Respond
Kobbie Mainoo replied, “All the best bro.” Harry Amass wrote, “Good luck, bro.” Diego Leon posted, “The best for you, hermano,” while Shea Lacey added, “All the best my brother.” Toby Collyer left a red love heart emoji under the post.
The response fit the scale of his exit. Aljofree had been inside the club for 14 years and described the place in personal terms, but he has not made a first-team appearance for United this season. That gap between academy promise and senior action is the sharpest edge of the story.
Loan Minutes At Accrington And Notts County
His recent football has come away from Old Trafford. Last season, he was loaned to Accrington Stanley, where he made 27 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals. In the first half of this season, he played 11 times for Notts County and scored once before returning to United in the January transfer window.
He was brought into first-team training in April ahead of United’s 2-1 win over Brentford, but he was not included in the matchday squad. That detail underlines how close he has been to the senior picture without breaking into it on a regular basis.
The departure points toward a summer move for a 21-year-old defender who has already spent much of the last two seasons on loan. For United, it removes another academy name from the list of players trying to force a way into the first team; for Aljofree, it opens the door to a place where the minutes have to be more than occasional. On Sunday, United were due to finish their Premier League season away at Brighton.
