João Palhinha is in talks with Sporting CP over a return to Lisbon, and those discussions are progressing well. The Bayern Munich midfielder has spent the season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but his next move is still tied to how the deal is structured.

The main sticking point is whether FC Bayern will agree to a loan with an option to buy or a permanent transfer. That choice matters because Tottenham have a €30m option to buy, while Palhinha’s preference is a return to Portugal.

Palhinha’s Lisbon preference

At 30, Palhinha is in a position where the next contract shape matters as much as the destination. He is under contract at Bayern until 2027/28, yet Bayern have made clear he does not have a place in Munich and does not appear to fit Vincent Kompany’s tactical setup.

That leaves Sporting as the club pushing hardest for a return. The talks are moving, but they are moving around the same issue: whether Bayern let him leave on another loan or accept a permanent exit now.

Tottenham’s €30m option

Tottenham still hold the €30m option to buy, and Roberto De Zerbi would like to keep him. Palhinha has spent the season on loan there, but Bayern consider that move not to have gone to plan, and a second loan would delay any chance of recouping the transfer fee.

That is the friction point in the middle of the deal. Sporting want the player, Tottenham have an option, Bayern want clarity on the fee structure, and Palhinha wants Portugal.

For now, the clearest development is that the Lisbon talks are active and advancing. If Bayern soften on the terms, Sporting can move quickly; if they do not, Tottenham’s €30m option keeps the midfielder tied to a different path than the one he prefers.
