David Malukas watched the 2024 Indianapolis 500 from the sidelines after a wrist injury, and the experience changed how he sees the race. The IndyCar driver spent much of the day in the media centre at Indianapolis Motor Speedway while Josef Newgarden was celebrating his second Indianapolis 500 crown in as many years.
Malukas at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Malukas said he came away with a different view of the event after taking it in as a fan. “To come there as a fan and experience what makes it so special, there’s so much that you don’t get and pick up off when you’re in the car.”
He watched from the media centre balcony to the right side of the Pagoda building, and he also served as a temporary part of IndyCar’s content team in May 2024. That put him close enough to feel the scale of the place without being in the field of drivers trying to win it.
Snake Pit and the crowd
Malukas said he was at the Snake Pit at 8 o’clock in the morning and counted the race crowd at over 350,000 people. “And that was just the energy of over 350,000 people screaming in unison or cheering.”
From the balcony, he said the setting hit differently. “This place is huge and it’s shaking the entire facility. It’s outrageous. I’ve never had an experience like that. It gave me goosebumps. I almost started getting tears in my eyes.”
He also described watching the finish unfold with a friend from the media centre. “I was there with my friend betting who’s going to be in the battle in the end,” he said. “Last lap, everybody was like: ‘Woah!’”
Wrist injury changed the day
The altered perspective traced back to a pre-season mountain-biking accident in 2024 that left him with a wrist injury. That injury ended his new Arrow McLaren deal ahead of May 2024 and forced him to watch the race instead of driving it.
Even with that setback, he said the day left him grateful. “That was a very different experience and I felt very grateful to actually have that opportunity to be there as a fan.”
He closed the memory by putting his seat in the stands into plain terms. “It was my favorite Indy 500 because I wasn’t stressed out of my mind.”
