Joao Fonseca said he is training at 100% before Roland Garros, and luka pavlovic is the opponent tied to the first-round focus he carried into Friday’s Media Day. The Brazilian said the minor injury that kept him out of Hamburg is behind him now. He wants Paris to be about clean tennis and a clean bill of health.
Roland Garros Media Day
“I'm much better, it wasn't anything serious to worry too much about. We were simply focused on Roland Garros, and with the tournament approaching, we wanted to rest a bit and focus on fully recovering. I'm already training at 100%, I feel good on the court, and I'm excited to play here again,” Fonseca said on Roland Garros 2026 Media Day.
That is the clearest update he could give before the first round. Fonseca said he felt good on court, and that mattered after the minor injury interrupted his clay-court swing and forced him to miss Hamburg.
Fonseca and Rublev
Fonseca also tied his return to a match he has already lived through on this stage. “The first time I felt like I was becoming a bit more famous was after the match against Rublev last year,” he said. The opponent is part of the backdrop, but the immediate task is simpler: get through the opening match and keep moving.
He did not frame a good run only around wins. “Yes, I've seen the draw. I think a good Roland Garros would be playing good tennis, feeling good on the court, being healthy, and giving my best. It doesn't matter if I win or lose; I want to leave the court knowing I did everything I could; that's my mentality. Of course, I would like to reach the fourth round, quarterfinals, or whatever, but I'm taking it step by step, focused on the first round, and hoping to progress,” Fonseca said.
Fourth round or quarterfinals
That sets the bar in plain terms. Fonseca said he would be happy if he leaves Roland Garros knowing he emptied himself on court, and he also named the fourth round and quarterfinals as targets if the draw opens up. For now, his status is the useful news: he says he is healthy enough to train at full speed and ready to start his tournament on clay’s biggest stage.
