Exeter’s great west run returned today with road closures and diversions starting from 7am across the city. The half marathon and 10k races began at 9am, and delays were expected on several routes until around 1pm.
Exeter City Centre Routes
Thousands of runners were expected to tackle the two races, and the traffic plan touched roads linking the arena, Pinhoe Road and the football ground, then moved through the city centre past Central Station. Out of town, the restrictions reached along the A396 as far as Stoke Woods.
Pinhoe Road between Hill Barton Road and Summer Lane was closed from 7am to 10am. For drivers trying to cross the city early, that created a tighter window before the race traffic settled into the later morning pattern.
Tiverton And Crediton Diversions
The diversion routes sent traffic from Tiverton along Stoke Hill, Church Hill, Harrington Lane, Beacon Heath, Beacon Lane, Prince Charles Road and Mount Pleasant Road. Traffic coming from Crediton was directed along Cowley Hill, St Andrew's Hill and Okehampton Road.
Stagecoach also ran shuttle buses between Exeter city centre and the Event Village before and after the event. Those buses departed from Exeter City Centre Bus Station between 07:00 AM and 08:00 AM, then continued at regular intervals throughout the morning.
Race Day Timing In Exeter
The key timing left little slack for anyone using those routes. Road closures and diversions started from 7am, the races followed at 9am, and the citywide disruption was expected to ease only after around 1pm.
For residents, commuters and visitors, the practical move was simple: use the diversion routes rather than the closed roads, and plan around the busier morning period if travel through central Exeter could not wait.
